Training at Whitespace

We totally appreciate this journey requires a big commitment in time, money and energy and if you are interested in our November Course, I’d really recommend booking onto our Teacher Training Taster Session – in-person or livestream. This session is a great opportunity to get a taster of the course, meet the teachers and ask any questions.

YOUR 200hr TEACHERS

Deborah Berryman

Founder & Director
I’m a London run away who hides out in a tiny village in the country, having left behind a successful (and sometimes exhausting) corporate career.

Yoga, movement & meditation has had such a positive impact in my life, and I’ve spent the last 15 years on a personal mission to share the benefits of these wellbeing practices with others.

I love our community here at Whitespace – such a kind bunch of down-to-earth people, doing their best to find connection, peace and a little sweetness in a sometimes frantic world. Seeing these people ‘light-up’ about their life again is what gives me the most joy.

I try to get to classes here often (I LOVE our teachers!), recently exploring Somatics which has been a joyful way to slow down.

I bring a steady presence to the studio, helping to hold our vision at heart and make sense out of what can sometimes feel like chaos. All fuelled by a delicious pot of ‘nuclear green’ home-made soup for lunch (kale, spinach, carrot, leek and cumin if you’re interested!)

Dawn Wright

Teacher Trainer
I have been teaching since 2003 and hold a BWY Diploma and Yoga Alliance Senior Yoga Teacher (SYT). I have also undergone specialist teacher training in Vinyasa Flow and Pregnancy yoga. I continue my training by regularly studying with some of Yoga’s most respected teachers from all over the world. My approach is nurturing and supportive, giving students both the space and support to explore their own yoga practice, with a strong emphasis on the link of breath and movement. Expect to feel both energised and relaxed – and to have some fun.www.dawnwrightyoga.co.uk

Mona Baur

Teacher Trainer
I’ve been practicing Yoga for almost 25 years and have practiced and studied with a variety of teachers. Special thanks and gratitude to the teachings of Simon Low, who has laid the foundation of my practice and the teaching and guidance of Swami Pragyamurti and Uma Dinsmore-Tuli, whose wisdom and clarity have been an inspiration. My yoga style is rooted in a traditional Hatha approach, incorporating Buddhist mindfulness, yin yoga principles as well as creative and intuitive movements. My classes are taught partly in a creative, flowing style, partly holding postures, leaving space for students to work as deep or gentle as they need to. Pranayama and meditation practices are part of each class and the breath guiding each movement.www.redfieldyoga.co.uk

Matthew Huy

Teacher Trainer
A Senior Teacher with Yoga Alliance Professionals, Matt has been teaching yoga for over 15 years. With a Bachelor of Arts in Dance from California State University Long Beach, a teacher certification from a Sivananda ashram in India, a Foundation Course with YogaFit, a Pilates Matwork Certification with Power Pilates and a Thai Yoga Massage Foundation Course with the Sunshine Network, Matt brings a variety of influences into his teaching. In his teaching of anatomy, Matt aims to provide the student with a broad framework for understanding the human body so that students can have their own insights, rather than expecting them to memorise long lists of muscle attachments and biochemicals. His course focuses on the musculoskeletal and nervous systems and he always ties the information back to yoga. He is known for his light-hearted and engaging approach to presenting complex anatomical concepts.

Albert

Teacher Training Assistant
I’ve been assisting with Whitespace teacher courses ever since finding this wonderful, friendly and humerus team.
They’re no skeleton crew, but they still find time to wish me well and tickle my funny bone! I enjoy demonstrating my best angles and poses in class - even when it feels like people are just looking straight through me. One day I might start my own Teaching journey, but tibia honest, – I just don’t have the guts.

All course dates are livestream with in-studio sessions planned in June. These dates are held at our beautiful, light-filled dedicated yoga studio in Milton Keynes – the perfect environment to immerse yourself in this wonderful practice and share experiences with like-minded people.

We’re looking for serious and committed students with a solid foundation in the basic yoga postures.

It‘s not about having an advanced practice by mastering the tricky poses, but rather a mature practice – knowing your own limits and coming to the mat with a willingness to learn. We ask for a minimum of 2 years regular and consistent yoga practice, preferably through class attendance.

You will also require a regular yoga teacher who can provide a reference to support your application. In addition, some element of self-practice is viewed very favourably.

To make the learning experience as comprehensive as possible, there are assignments to help embed and integrate the learning. Outside of the training days, you will also be required to undertake a regular home practice, attend regular classes and complete written assignments.

Over the duration of the course, the time spent on written and reading assignments averages out at 2 hours a week.

Our Teachers have been carefully picked for their outstanding knowledge and teaching skill, and for their dedication to students’ learning.

The programme is led by our very own Whitespace Founder and Director Deborah Berryman, along with Dawn Wright, Mona Baur and Matthew Huy. All are Senior Yoga Teachers (SYT) with Yoga Alliance professionals, who have the highest standards of teaching. SYT status is the pinnacle of the yoga teacher career path, together bringing over 60 years of teaching experience, along with hundreds of hours of ongoing development.  (can we link to teachers please)

We also often invite Guest Teachers to support the learning experience.

Places are limited to ensure the best standard of training, and providing a personal and supportive learning experience. We usually receive more applications than we have places, and these are considered on a first-come-first-served basis. All applications and investments are subject to acceptance on to the training course(s).

In this instance, we will be unable to give you a certificate or graduate you from the training, and your course fees are still due and cannot be refunded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our mission to show the world the life-changing benefits of yoga requires that we do our part to make yoga accessible to all, without exception.

We recognise that increasing the representation of diverse teachers in the yoga community is central to fulfilling that mission. We are taking action on this recognition by offering 2 scholarships, covering 75% of tuition, for individuals who identify as Black, Asian or LGBTQ in our Autumn Online Teacher Training program. ABOUT THE 200HR TEACHER TRAINING AT WHITESPACE

If you feel that pull, it’s a REALLY good sign! We’re looking for serious and committed students with a solid foundation in the basic yoga postures. It‘s not about having an ‘advanced’ practice by mastering the tricky poses, but rather a mature practice – knowing your own limits and coming to the mat with a willingness to learn. We ask for around 2 years regular and consistent yoga practice, preferably through class attendance – but we will also consider students with other relevant experience and/or an established home practice. You will also ask for a yoga teacher who can provide a reference to support your application.

Yes you can. Lots of students undertake our teacher training to simply deepen their own personal development, to open up opportunities for the future, or just teach their family and friends. Some are still undecided – happy to see where the process takes them. All of these are welcomed and encouraged.

You actually start teaching your own private class while you’re in training. This ensures you’re fully supported by our Teaching Faculty during the ‘learning to teaching’ process. This begins approximately half way through the course to give you lots of experience and opportunity to learn. It also gives you the opportunity to earn money to cover course fees.

It’s a GREAT question! (and again, we really encourage you to ask this about any teacher training provider). Our Teacher Training Programme is one of the most thorough, current, and experiential teacher training programmes in the country. All of our course material is taught by Senior Yoga Teachers – the highest possible teacher accreditation, and we’re a Yoga Alliance Approved Training Centre – an exclusive accolade that demonstrates our school has met excellent standards in teaching.

Aside from all of our certifications, our training is designed to immensely deepen your understanding and practice of yoga, and develop your confidence and skills as a yoga teacher. What is quite unique, is that you don’t just learn to teach your peers (i.e. people who can already do yoga!) You’ll have the opportunity to set-up and teach your own private class while you’re in training – spending up to 6 months honing both your teaching and business skills in a real-life environment. We’ve planned spaces in between your training sessions to allow for integration of the learning – we’ve found this makes this best teachers and makes the transition from training to teacher as seamless as possible. It’s why we received 98% Excellent Rating in our last course, and over 90% of our graduates are still teaching a year on!

Definitely! We highly recommend you do this when exploring any Teacher Training Programme, to ensure you ‘connect’ with the course tutors. We offer regular teacher training ‘taster sessions’ here at the studio, and also encourage you to come along and take a class with the course tutors here at Whitespace to get a feel for our beautiful space and their teaching style. Can’t make a taster session? You can book a call and have a chat with one of our team.

EVERYONE feels like this before they start the training (including our very own Course Director!). It’s perfectly normal to feel this way – we haven’t yet taught you the knowledge, or given you the skills and experience that help to build your confidence. There is plenty of practice to do this in a safe place with your co-learners. Like any skill, it can be learned, practiced and refined. Over 90% of our graduates go on to teach, so we are very confident that – with commitment and hardwork – you’ll get there too.

Most gyms and studios require yoga teachers to have an Accredited Teacher’s Certificate and Liability Insurance. On successful completion of this course, you will be awarded a Whitespace 200hr Teacher’s Certificate and be Accredited by Yoga Alliance Professionals, as well as having obtained insurance.

Absolutely! Yoga online is here to stay and will become a fundamental part of your yoga practice and teaching. Livestreaming still allows us to connect with each other and provide space for Q&A, as well as observing and giving feedback throughout the training. It’s really the same as being in a classroom together, only in the comfort of your home – wherever you are.

Online learning makes yoga accessible for a whole new group of people – those who may be isolated or find it difficult to travel, or who may prefer to avoid large groups. We’ve also found that online teaching demands subtly different teaching skills, particularly focusing us on the use of language and ability to offer adjustments when touch is not possible. We are all learning to enhance our teaching skills, whether we’re teaching through Zoom, or in person.
Whitespace have already run a number of training courses with a livestream option with great success, adapting our course content to make it more accessible in an online environment and are embracing the learning opportunities.

Whitespace Yoga Teacher training allows you to deepen your practice and learn about yourself as you learn to teach yoga to others. Yoga online is here to stay and will become a fundamental part of your yoga practice and teaching. Livestreaming allows us to offer connections with the teacher and other students, as well as Q&A, observing and giving feedback throughout the training. It’s really the same as being in a classroom together, only in the comfort of your home – wherever you are.

Whitespace have already been running two of these courses online, and students have fed back the value of convenience, not having to travel or make special arrangements such as childcare or pet sitting. There’s also the huge benefit of using recordings to catch up on missed sessions or for revision.
With Online Teacher Training, you can join a wider community of students and be taught by our yoga leadership team from around the country!

ABOUT THE COMMITMENT

Our aim is to provide a Teaching Training Programme at least once a year, sometimes twice.

Provided you have maintained your commitment to the process, we will always endeavour to support your progress and help you achieve graduation. We agree a Personal Development Plan to bring you back on track. Support may include, but is not restricted to, ‘mentoring’ by senior teachers, private sessions, additional assignments or workshops and reassessments. Please note, there may be additional fees associated with each of these support methods.

Each training session is key to the course schedule and the training you will receive. While students are able to catch up on the content, it isn’t possible to recreate discussions, questions and reflections in the same way as being a part of the group. Therefore we urge students to attend all sessions unless there are extreme extenuating circumstances.  Students must also complete 100% of the contact hours to obtain their Yoga Alliance Accreditation.

However, we understand you may not be able to foresee every conflict, and so we have the following contingency in place –

For online training

• If you miss a maximum of 35 hours: You may still complete the programme with your class provided you catch up using the available videos and successfully pass the course assessments to demonstrate understanding.

• If you miss 36-50 hours: You may still complete the programme with your class provided you catch up using the available videos and successfully pass the course assessments. You’ll also need to complete a private session(s) with Course Tutor. Private sessions must be requested in writing and completed within the course timeline. Private sessions are subject to the Course Tutor’s availability and will be charged at the rate offered by the relevant teacher. Whitespace reserves the right to change the price of these private sessions at any time. The current cost of a private session is £90 per hour.

• If you miss +50 hours: In this event, the learning has been compromised and you can no longer obtain certification during this intake. You may choose to continue with the course simply for the learning experience. Or if you would like Certification, you will need to retake the programme, at a discounted price, which is subject to availability. We should note, due to high demand, spaces on future courses cannot be guaranteed.

For in-person training

• If you miss a maximum of 4 days: You may still complete the programme with your class provided you schedule a private session(s) or semi-private session with Course Tutor. Private sessions must be requested in writing and completed within the course timeline. Private sessions are subject to the Course Tutor’s availability and will be charged at the rate offered by the relevant teacher. Whitespace reserves the right to change the price of these private sessions at any time. A 2 to 3-hour private session equates to one day. The current cost of a private session is £90 per hour. The maximum number of private make-up sessions is four.

• If you miss +4 days: In this event, the learning has been compromised and you can no longer obtain certification during this intake. You may choose to continue with the course simply for the learning experience. Or if you would like Certification, you will need to retake the programme, at a discounted price, which is subject to availability. We should note, due to high demand, spaces on future courses cannot be guaranteed.

There’s some pre-course reading for each module as well as a regular home practice throughout the course. This will help to absorb the coursework, and to fully benefit and grasp the information taught. Expect to spend approx 30hours in total on written assignments. Please note that there is time between each modules to complete these and mentors will be at hand to help, should it be needed.

Our Teacher Training programme is spread over 12 – 15 months to allow plenty of time to integrate the learning, deepen your own personal practice as well as embed your new teaching skills.
If I have already done the BWY Foundation course, do I still have to complete the entire course?

As our course is structured differently to BWY, all aspects of the course must be taken to complete the full number of hours required for the 200hr Programme & Yoga Alliance Accreditation.

We make our cancellation and refund policy transparent – ensuring it’s available before booking, at the time of booking and also on your receipt confirmation – so you can make an informed decision. Please take time to read this carefully. All clients are asked to agree to Whitespace terms and conditions upon booking a course or workshop.

In the event of Whitespace cancelling an event:

In this instance we will be unable to give you a certificate or graduate you from the training, and your event fees cannot be refunded.

ABOUT THE QUALIFICATION

We’re always looking for passionate, committed, well-trained teachers, who uphold our high standards of safe, inspiring and accessible teaching. Whilst we can’t guarantee any opportunities, our Teaching Certificate is the main gateway onto the Whitespace schedule. Over the years, many of our outstanding graduates have become part of the Whitespace teaching team.

There are also opportunities for our very best graduates to become Teaching Assistants on the TT programme.
We hope this answers all of your questions. If you have any further questions, or wish to discuss any of the topics covered about, please don’t hesitate to contact us on email or call 01908 566610.

Our graduates work in yoga studios, gyms and community centres. Many of them now teach here at Whitespace!
You will have all of the knowledge, experience, qualifications and insurance to develop your teaching career in the way that works for you. Yoga Alliance is an internationally recognised accreditation, so really you work anywhere in the world! Bali anyone?
